The words in this activity pack are common words that often appear in the English language. However, they contain a tricky sound which requires special attention to learn. This pack contains a complete list of the most common heart words and activity sheets to support your child's learning.

Heart words are taught at slightly different times and ways depending on the phonics scheme being used these are the ones most likely to be encountered in Year R and Year 1.

I have designed these activities to promote active learning of sounds, instead of memorisation. Using an approach which acknowledges the importance of phonics while addressing the irregular parts of words. Here's how it works:

Decodable and Irregular Parts:

• We apply phonics to the decodable parts of the word.
• The irregular parts are identified and marked with a heart.

Learning by Heart:

• We teach children that the irregular part of the word is the portion to be memorised by heart.
• The remaining parts are meant to be decoded using their phonics knowledge.

Effective Grouping:

• Heart Words are organised into phases.
• Words sharing common irregular sounds are grouped together.
